SatelliteJuno Kyoti was starting to feel the pain that comes with age – and no pain was more acute than the loss of her husband. But she was also seeing the rewards. She was much in demand as a surgeon, and managed to command a very handsome salary because of this. SJ was enjoying seeing her children growing up, and being a grandmother.
She’d never predicted her life would turn out to be, well, so conventional – but it had been very fulfilling.
Her granddaughter Karis was the cutest thing – although somewhat mischevious – and SJ was thrilled that her son Abel and his wife Marcie were expecting baby number two.
Her daughters seemed to be progressing well at school, and Ariel had recently decided she wanted to be a rock star. The love of music had given her a new lease of life, and even though she hated the outdoors, she would put up with it in order to play gigs and build up a reputation.
SJ was a little concerned about Cinderella. The girl was clearly talented at athletics, and like most of the family, she loved playing chess and gazing at the stars, but she seemed a little too interested in SJ’s late father, Joseph. Although Joseph had been a great dad, she hoped his life as a master thief hadn’t proved too interesting for Cinderella.
Cinderella hadn’t told her family about her lifetime desire to be the Emperor of Evil. She suspected it wouldn’t go down too well. When they asked about what she wanted to do when she grew up, she fudged the issue by saying ‘something to do with sports probably’ and hoped no-one would ask too many questions, not least her sister-in-law Marcie, who was in the police force.
Of course, it wasn’t long before the twins had to think more seriously about their career paths. Ariel aged up to become friendly and quickly enrolled at music school.
She decided to step out of the shadows of her late grandmother Daniela. She wasn’t her grandma’s clone, she was her own person, and so started to cultivate an image to match.
Cinderella, on the other hand, really was a chip off the old block. She hoped that on her birthday, the influence of sleeping in Rain’s old bedroom would rub off and she would finally become evil, something that would no doubt help her fulfil her lifetime dream.
Unfortunately, she was just too much like her grandfather, and she rolled one of his traits, a trait that had been passed on to her mother SJ. Cinderella Kyoti, the woman hoping to become Emperor of Evil was also…
…a coward.
Karis Kyoti managed to learn to walk, use the potty and talk – just in time for her parents to have a conversation with her about having a baby brother or sister. Karis was slightly nervous – she was the special girl round these parts, wasn’t she?
After another ridiculously calm labour, Marcie gave birth to her second daughter, Daisy. And with a birthday soon after, Karis was beginning to learn what it meant to really be a big sister.
She soon found it wasn’t too bad to grow up, though. Her family gave the baby lots of cuddles, but they had plenty of time to help her learn chess and to give her homework advice.
The girls of the family weren’t the only ones whose lives were progressing. Abel Kyoti was proving to be a bit of a hot-shot in the science career, being promoted at a fast rate of knots. SJ hated to admit it, but getting the fishing out of his system early on had actually been very good for her son, who was now incredibly focussed on family and career in the way she used to fear he wouldn’t be.
He’d also become the first male member of the Kyoti family to ever pick up a screwdriver, making sure as many of the electronic items in the house were as unbreakable as possible.
Daniel Kyoti was also coming close to fulfilling his ambition to be a Renaissance Sim. He mastered the painting skill, and with the amount of time he and Ariel spent jamming, it wouldn’t be long before he mastered music as well.
The third skill he was hoping to perfect was logic. It made sense in a family of police, criminals, chess legends, doctors and scientists – after all, he was never short of someone to play with.
His mother, SkyBlueGinger, had now returned to Sunset Valley after completing a very successful space mission and was staying in NASA-sponsored retirement accommodation. Daniel and SJ were both very pleased to have her back. They invited her and their old friend Miranda over for tea and a few games of chess one evening.
SkyBee and Daniel chatted over chess. She told him all about her space exploration, and he told her all about the money he was making from tips and painting. As they were talking, they heard Cinderella screaming from the bathroom next door.
They rushed to see what was happening.
Miranda Chamberlain was the oldest Sim in Sunset Valley and the only one old enough to have known all seven generations of Kyotis. SkyBee and SJ had thoroughly expected she would be telling their great-great grandchildren all about them. But it wasn’t to be. After centuries of avoiding its grip, death had finally caught up with Miranda.
The family rushed in to see their oldest friend depart. As Miranda had no family that they knew of, they agreed to bury her remains in the family graveyard. But the grief was too much for SkyBee…
…and death took her too.
It was too overwhelming for cowardly Cinderella.
Marcie was as stoical as ever, though.
Daniel Kyoti reached out to try and touch his mother. Minutes ago they’d been playing chess – how could she suddenly be gone like this? It wasn’t fair, she was too young, too full of life… she was his mum.
SatelliteJuno wept and wept. Her oldest friend, her parents, her husband and now her sister, all gone. Her life had changed irrevocably and she knew it was only a matter of time before she would join them. What she couldn’t quite work out was if she was looking forward to that time, or wanted it to stay away as long as possible.
